Hi guys,

As above, a machine I use use infrequently has suddenly started playing up :(

Initially thought it might have been the ram as there was a bit of a question mark over when I installed it but I've swapped sticks and the issue remains...

I get as far as the loading screen and then it reboots - any ideas? Was going to try defrag/chkdsk next?

A customer brought in a laptop today with the same issue. Chkdsk allowed the laptop to boot, but it turns out quite a few sectors were dead, so hard drive possibly on its way out.

A few weeks ago I had another one - the only way I could fix the problem was by running a repair from the XP disc. Very painless, nothing lost. Just had to re do some settings and Windows updates.

And yes it could be your RAM. It's such a generic problem that it could be almost anything really.

Start with Chkdsk and go from there.

Make sure you check the health of the hard drive with crystaldiskinfo or speed fan.
