Windows XP restarts during boot sequence...

Hi guys,

My spare xp machine won't boot into windows anymore - it gets as far as the windows flag then reboots itself

Safe mode is the same... any ideas? Nothing, hardware/software-wise, has changed.

You've run memtest86+?

Suppose you could try running a live linux cd, to see if it is hardware related, if that works ok then it could be the windows install? you can also use the live cd to copy off files to an external drive.

Have you disabled auto-reboot to see what the error is that's being created?

Yer I would have said that, but sounds like it is just getting to the XP logo, then restarting straight away?

try all the options on the f8 menu, last known configuration, disable auto restart etc.

If none of them work try windows repair from the windows cd. if that does not work, load the windows recovery console from the windows cd setup. then type fixmbr and fixboot. if that does not fix the problem, then try reinstall windows. if that does not fix the problem then it could be a hardware fault.
