Hi all,

Sorry for the long post but please can you read it and let me know what you all think. Where to start...

Ok, a few days ago little strange things started to occur on my machine. Some programs would not run because they had become corrupt and also all of my codecs dissappeared. Then I noticed something worse, my internet connections folder is now empty and I do not have my little UPnP icon on my taskbar saying it has detected my router. However, I still have 100% functionality.

So I ran NOD32. No Viruses. I ran Spybot. No ad-aware. I then ran Ad-aware which found 1 criticial file, which was a trojan in a system restore point. I have since removed this. I have also ran HiJackThis and it looks fine. I can account for every entry that is listed. (i.e. Java, Oracle, etc etc). I have checked what is starting up with the PC and there is nothing suspicious there, and I also run with most services disabled. I have re-checked these and they are all fine too.

I have since then managed to get some codecs back on the system by re-installing DirectX, dvd software, encoders, etc. This seems to be ok now. Also, I have fixed the one or two corrupt programs by re-installing them. I must say that the system appears good. I have no crashing, BSOD's, and I can work and play for hours and hours with no problems.

Now the main problem is with my network connections, here is a screenshot:-

I should have two nic's showing in this folder (one disabled). However, I have none? I have re-installed chipset drivers and LAN drivers but to no avail. I also had a corrupt Windows Firewall. I had to re-build the repository, and register some DLL's to get the Firewall to work again. Also, note now in the Start Menu it says "Empty" first. That never used to be there, it used to just say "Show All Connections."

How can I get my LAN's etc to show in this folder again?

At first I thought, perhaps my overclock is slowly corrupting data (perhaps I have pushed too far). However, I have ran a Windows Chkdsk and System Mechanic both of which report the hard drives to be healthy and fine.

Should I put this all down to perhaps this one trojan?

Thanks for any help! It's very strange!

Hi,

I would suggest checking the BIOS to see if the LAN is enabled. Secondly, go to device manager and uninstall any drivers relating to the LAN/Nic ports, restart the machine and reinstall the drivers. Hoping that when you restart it will say new hardware found. If not, just reinstall the drivers anyway and see how it goes.

Maybe the virus did do something, can't be sure. Failing that, I would try do a repair install on the system. Should come right that way, however try the first suggestion if you haven't already. Hope this helps...

PS.Can you please send a copy of your desktop backround to [email protected] ? :p

Long shot but have a look in your registry
to see if either HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\25 or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\26 exist.

If so, export them as a backup and delete them - if this makes no difference after a reboot then double click the exported files to re-add them.

Used to have similar issues when I worked for BT but it shouldn't really affect the LAN.

Worth a shot though.

Thanks, ok mate I'll go double-check and also remove them from device manager. Like I say, they look to be installed fine and I can get on the net, etc perfectly ok even though they don't show in that folder. But I'll try removing them and restarting, cheers.

Oh and the wallpaper. lol. It's Emily Scott, have a look on ************** :p

EDIT: No way I didn't realise we couldn't post that site! woops!

Hi,

I tried the above and it did not help sadly. :(

Thanks anyway!

I have just had to do a Windows Repair to fix the problem.

It didn't go smoothly, I got some errors during the repair, however, back up and running now and everything still works and it looks fixed. Fingers crossed!!
