On the contrary, many people saw speed increases witih SP3.

And why don't you like IE7 and WMP11? They aren't completely different, merely evolutions, and you miss out on some great features (tabbed browsing on ie7 for instance).

I can't say that I noticed any difference, speed wise when I installed on laptop and pc.
But I see that SP3 is in add/remove programs so looks like you can remove it if your not happy, or create a restore point before installation, although it may already do that for you?

Hi,
I had an Asus A8N32SLI Mobo and upgraded to SP3 about this time last year. I had a mare of problems with it and consequently found that the BIOS (most recent) was incompatible. That mobo is now no more !
Thought I'd post this just in case the Op has the same or similar Asus mobo.

Also, believe there were issues with manufacturer built AMD machines which had an Intel based OS flashed onto them.

From my own personally experience, if you don't need SP3 then steer clear of it. You can still take all the Security patches etc.

You really should be using IE7 by now anyway, IE8 is already on the horizon. If you don't get on with it, try an alternative.

Yep. I had a speed increase on SP3 install too.
I use WMP (since 9) by default for my music player, though use VLC for video so I dont have to dick about with codecs.
I use Firefox rather than IE also.

Yes, it is worthwhile upgrading from xp sp2 to sp3, however if you have an AMD processor be warned that there are some issues for lots of people with xp sp3. Intel processor though should be fine without issues.

Hi - linky provided below for the issues encountered with AMD based PCs after/during installation of XP SP3. First issue is where the OEM XP OS rolled out to HP desktops was the same one which was rolled into Intel based ones. Causing plenty of grief for those HP AMD owners who attempted to install SP3.
Does your amd based computer boot after installing xp sp3

I'm just commenting on my own experience, and the subsequent info I found.

reading that it a problem with an intel driver being loaded on an AMD PC
nothing to do with flashing, so your wording in your post was misleading which is why i asked
its all clear now as the the problem

No worries...was writing quickly....appreciate flashing is normally associated with BIOS. :)

i'm sure all those issues are resolved now, making sure you have the latest drivers is something that is worth doing regardless
