Windows XP update failing

I have just installed a fresh (legitimate) copy of Windows XP Home SP2 on a laptop and activated it.

I then used Windows Update to update it to SP3. This works fine with the caveat that the installation goes from 2.5Gb to about 4.5Gb  Any idea how I can reclaim some of this 2Gb?

My real question is that having installed SP3, I tried to upgrade MISE6 to MSIE7 - that keeps failing with the useful message that I should try it again. Does anyone have any idea what is going wrong here?

Incidentally, I do reboot between each step.

Thanks.

I'm having the exact same problem after SP3, theres 4 updates that just wont go, gnona try them one at a time on custom when i get home

I have just found this:
Hi Sabastian,

Easy to fix.

Just go to C:\Windows\System32 and find and register Wups2.dll.

To do that, right click on it and select 'Open With' then 'Choose Program' and find C:\Windows\System32\Regsvr32.

If you choose to 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file' then all you will have to do is double click on any .dll to register it.

Once you have registered Wups2.dll your problem will disappear.

I hope this helps.

Gary O'Connor.

PS: If you are a programmer it is probably worth doing the same with a .ocx file to make them easily registerable with a double click.
HERE

I haven't tried it yet but will do.

what a weird way to register files..

start, run, regsvr32 filename.dll

thanks for the dll tip though :)

-that kb article looks promising too, bit of a shotgun approach, but there's no harm in it :)
