Windows XP Won't Start

Yesterday I uninstalled a piece of software from my PC and I was asked to reboot for the changes to be effective. I said I would restart later as I was going to do a few more bits before restarting, but before I got a chance to do anything we had a power cut!

Now when I try and start up my PC, I get given the choice of starting the PC in safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, last known working time and to start Windows normally. Any of these choices gives the same result, the Windows "splash" screen shows up, the loading bar fills up two and a half times before the PC restarts itself again.

I have a copy of Windows XP Pro and tried booting from the CD. This gives me the option of installing Windows XP or to press 'R' to try and repair it.

If I select 'R' I am taken to a command prompt and have tried using the help command to figure out what I am doing but I am lost.

Can any one advise me on what I should be doing to get my PC back up and running again please. I don't want to be formatting my hard drive at all as there is loads of stuff I want to keep!

Any information would be much appreciated as I am running out of ideas.

Thanks for all these ideas guys.

I have tried all of them except for formatting my drive and the same issue keeps happening!

Could it possibly be an issue with my hard drive or RAM now rather than a Windows issue?

Also, does anyone know where I woul dstand with regards to compensation from the electric board?

My hard drive is SATA. What would happen if I plugged it into my mates PC that has a spare SATA port?

Would I be able to access my drive through his copy of Windows and back everything up??
