Windows XP x64 - help needed

I have some questions about this OS.
If you have a 64-bit CPU, in order to take advantage of thr 64-bit processing, is Windows x64 needed? The same goes with processors with dual cores, is this OS needed in order to take advantage of the second core? Lastly, does this OS currently have issues with a lot of games and other applications that were written for 32-bit processors?
