Hey guys,

My mates work is offering their employees oem copies of XP 64bit for £15 (iirc) as part of a monthly MS promotion.

Seeing as though I don't really want to upgrade to Vista 64 yet on my main machine, I thought XP 64 would be quite a good short-term compromise (and for only £15!)? I’m currently using XP Pro, but I quite like the idea of the extra performance increase and the full utilisation of my 4GB of ram ;)

Anyway, back to my reason for posting, although the oem CD's have the usual sleeves/key etc, my mate says that the installation he did on a machine required no activation or wga confirmation or anything (in comparison to Home/Pro) which made me a bit a suspicious of their authenticity?

I thought nearly all MS products had to be verified upon installation, or a least on connection to the internet or installing updates etc. I know there are exceptions: I understand that educational/student versions of some MS software don't need any keys even when you're installing them, but I would have thought that XP 64 would require activation etc?

Do you think it’s still safe to buy a copy? I know its only £15, but I'd hate to end up buying a dodgy bit of software… They seem to look and feel genuine and my mates not had any problems with his?

My OEM Vista 64 has a 30 day period before it has to activated. It doesn't nag every few mins but it must be activated after 30 days.

It could be a special corparation version of XP, that doesn't require activation.

That.. or its just a nock off version of XP with the activation bits taken out :P

Your work is most likely part of an Enterprise Volume Licensing Agreement. XP under VLAs don't require activation and is completely legit. This was changed for Vista though.

Best thing to do is find out if all your hardware is supported b4 your install xp x64. The XP x64 driver support is not dire unless you have dire hardware:p i have been running it fine for 2 years some companies i know for sure are fine with xp x64 are Epson, Logitech, mobo drivers are always good for it, sound cards work with it, and your ipod, GFX card,

Ov you will have to have a good look your self

Only thing you may have a prob with is if u have a wireless card or a TV card:)
