Hi,

What's the easiest way to enable MKV playback in Windows Media Center?

I'm looking for the font of OcUK wisdom ;)

Shark007. It's all you'll need.

The latest Divx works too, but I've found it has issues with the aspect ratio being slightly out, and issues with 5.1 audio.

probably very good above, but i'd add two things...

one, are you using 64-bit media player (windows) as this can cause a lot of issues you dont need, and two, if you want to avoid codec packs, FFDShow can be used to do everything (MKV included). Cleaner, but not as simple to setup.

Yeah I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x64, the DIVX thing looks good but concerned about the aspect ratio thing

It's not something that I have encountered tbh.
IIRC Divx makes use of hardware decoding on gfx card, As it actually uses the built into win7 Media Foundation Framework
but can't remember the details... i.e. if it works with both major manufacturers.

Like I said I've always found the aspect ratio to be slightly out when using divx, also I just couldn't get it to output in 5.1 from windows media centre. It did 5.1 just fine in media player, but in MCE it just would not play ball. It's a shame because the xbox 360 streaming comes in very handy.

I would go with XBMC + http://xbmcwmc.teknowebworks.com/

As that's what i'm using, suddenly, no more codec problems (even with codec packs i had lots of issues with it not using DXVA or passthrough audio etc)

Plus the last time i went to update Shark007, it insisted on installing adware crap - it was all over the forums at the time, i don't know if the situation has changed since.
