I'm not sure how or why this started happening as I started getting errors with permissions on Windows accessing certain folders within C: > Program Files > WindowsApps.

Microsoft.549981C3F5F10_3.2105.19601.0_x64

I did find it was to do with Cortana, however I don't also longer can load up Xbox game bar using Start + G as well.

Just reinstalled Doom via Xbox Game Pass and again when accessing this it doesn't work and give similar error to another folder within WindowsApps.

Troubleshooting - I've ran powershell to uninstall certain apps and also scan disk as well. Without having to reinstall Windows or worse case reset profile. I'm not sure why it keeps coming up with this permission issue despite being the admin of my own PC. I've also ran security to select myself and admin for full permissions for that folder.

Personally, I believe it's apps for the Xbox side as well games installed via Game Pass.

Stole these two suggestions from a MS help thread on another forum

1. Try this 1st :

How you fix this is :

Click Start => Settings => Apps & Features => Click Cortana => Advanced Options => Reset => Reset.

It worked for me to get rid of the error box message => Restart your computer, I actually shut mine down & put it back on.

If that doesn't work :

2. Try this :

In Windows PowerShell => Run this Command through it for your system:

sfc /scannow

Once done => Run this command:

dism.exe /online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Once done => Restart your computer.

I had problems with games that I un-installed via Game Pass still remaining on my PC. I took ownership of the WindowsApps folders to delete the offending folders, but that started a whole cascade of problems resulting in a clean install of Windows. Hope you manage to get things resolved without resorting to that!

Yeah I saw all of this as well looking online. Done all of this however its the same issue.

Oh really? The thing is I managed to own permissions to the folder via properties > security and adding myself, I did try adding admin as well. So I can get into the folder though Windows still shows as error.

Wonder if it's just a Game Pass issue? Did you have multiple household profiles on your PC?

I had (and still have) 4 profiles, but only one was using Game Pass. Once I'd given my account permissions to access WindowsApps I started to get all kinds of random crashes in things like Windows Store and the Xbox app. I tried setting the permissions back the way that they were, but I couldn't resolve the problem. The re-install of Windows has so far not had the same problems, so we'll see how things go (it was about 6 months ago, so I've had enough time for things to go wrong).

I assume the other profiles were fine and weren't riddled with the permission issues on loading app store or anything else?

I have to admit that since they weren't using Game Pass, I never even thought of trying. I was kinda presuming that due to the Game Pass app being beta, and the fact that I was installing/uninstalling games on a fairly regular basis, that something had just gotten messed up with permissions for some apps - further compounded by Microsoft's weird DRM which seems to involve Game Pass games being both an installation and a virtual disk image at the same time.

That's fair. I did try this and figured out it was a profile issue in the end so didn't need to re-install Windows again. I created a new profile and copied my data across though minimal stuff. Checked and this is fine. I re-installed XBOX and Gamebar app along with a few games that had issues and its fine now.

Very strange.

Exactly what my grandson did - took ownership as above / deleted games == messed up whole of Windows 10 == had to reinstall !! A little knowledge is a dangerous thing!
