Hi all,
I've not posted in the motors section before, but this one has amazed me and I’m in need of some sound help and advice!
On the way to work this morning a large chunk of debris off the road was flicked up from a lorry going the opposite direction and smashed into my windscreen leaving a nice big chip/crack at eye level driver’s side of my windscreen.
It made me angry at the time, but as i carried on my journey I thought "no need to worry... just an auto-glass repair through my insurance".
After calling my insurance company it appears that they don’t do windscreen cover as default, it has to be ticked when taking out insurance on their website (but i went through a comparison site that, to my knowledge didn’t offer that option). Anyway, after hearing the news that repairs have to be paid myself and a little bit of questioning as to why they don’t make this more clear i was told to read the small print (I admit, it was silly not to). I'd advise anyone here to check they have this cover to avoid the predicament I’m in. "It can't be much", I though, ill phone auto-glass and find out.
To cut a long story short, my windscreen can not be repaired as the chip is in the driver’s field of vision and is too large; therefore needs to be replaced. Now when i was told the price i think my heart skipped a beat...£650 for a 2007 Ford Focus Heated Windscreen fitted by auto-glass!! Now I’m not saying auto-glass are unreasonable, I just didn’t realise how expensive windscreens are!
After a bit of research, auto-glass and other places do a fitting only, which is around £100 if I can source a windscreen myself.
I've exhausted my Google skills and have only come across one windscreen on the internet. Actually on the bay, bid price starting at £100 (pickup only - a good 80-90 miles from me). Would anyone happen to know of anywhere wholesale or other places that stock windscreens or can source them? I don’t see myself as an amateur 'googler' but i just can’t find anything!
Also any other advice is greatly appreciated.
On another note, bizarrely I can't even add windscreen cover to my existing insurance until the end of my policy (in October), which means I now have to change insurance companies to make sure that I’m covered for this in the future! What a Nightmare!
Cheers folks!
