Hi

My windscreen wipers been scraping my wind screen for a while on a car (Audi 05) is new to me but its an 05 plate. I notice it on the day that I got it but I thought it was just dirt/rubber from the wipers. It most have been doing for a while now as where its been catching the metal is showing and at an angle and its damaged the wind screen so badly that its getting replaced tomorrow on my insurance.

I took the car to autoglass the company that’s replacing my windscreen tomorrow and the bloke to a quick look and says its just the blade and to pop in to Audi (next door) and pick up a new one. When at Audi the sales chap says it can be the arm and book it in for a service mech to look at it, advising me strongly against just paying the blade and to cancel my windscreen repair as if its the arm I be paying for a lot of windscreens and blades; I thinking like hell as its going to cost me an arm and a leg plus if it starts happens again I'll get a arm cheaper on feabay.

I made my excesses and pop into Halfords – which was on the way back anyway and brought myself a set of blades for 25 pounds click them on and tested them. The metal parts of the blade that was damaging the screen is no longer touching but apart from the bits that was scrapping the windscreen, the old blade it looks new.

Has anyone else experience this? if so what did you do to fix it?

Thanks

It sounds like you fixed it?? If it was me id be happy enough that its no longer scraping the windscreen but keep an eye on it incase it started up again. No point in paying for unnecessary work imo.

Edit - If you bought it new the previous owner may have replaced the blades before selling, are you sure it just wasnt fitted properly?

Thats what I think.. as the car went in for its mot the day before I picked it up, it may have failed on the wipers and they rushed it for it to pass. anyway the garage that I brought it from is so far away from where I live its worth 60 pounds for the windscreen and 25 pounds for the blades not to go back as its a wasted day and fuel for me. Like you say I keep an eye on it.

The problem with the arms is different to what you describe.
Basically, the arms start to slow down and then stop altogether.
It's a problem with the linkage assembly. You can sytrip them down and copper grease them, or if you are unlucky (like me) you cannot get the splines off and it breaks.
I had to get a new one from Audi and it cost me £57, they were also adamant I required a new motor (the motor was fine)

The previous owner of my car - annoyingly - ran it for a long time with a broken rear wiper arm, there is a slight scratch in the path of the wiper now. :(

Sounds like yours is sorted, you say that the old wiper blade looks new apart from where it is worn through to the metal, am I following you right? does the new blade have any more of an edge, ie. taller in prfile than the old broken one?

it metal clips for where the rubber part was held on to the metal part of the blade was all worn in to an angle! I have a mark on the wind screen for each one, hence why its getting changed. Like I said, I've tested for a good five minutes and theres no signs of marks on the new wiper blade of it scrapping the wind screen. Hopefully the new blade has sorted it, I'll get the autoglass guy to check tomorrow.

It should be all done and dusted as the man from autoglass have just left. I did scared him a little as I thought I noticed a crack in the windscreen but ended up being fuff on the inside. tested the wiper blades and they certainly not making any marks on the glass, so safe to drive in 45 mins, getting it washed and going for a cruise in this nice weather...
