Hi

I'm running the Karmic RC with all the Updates (using the Nvidia 185 driver)

Wine works well for me and I've had no problems getting spotify working as well as some other tools to let me work.

Though steam installs - when I try install HL2 through steam I get the dialogue for "creating cache files" as it should appear before it just showing the download progress for the games on the main "My Games" screen.

My install never gets past "creating cache files" step though.

I thought I'd try browsing /home/username/.wine/ and delete the steam cache files and see if that helped - but I can only see folders in the wine drive/tree - not files, where would I find the files?

Using wine x.31 beta (latest in default repo on karmic)

Any ideas?

What percentage is that in the installer? if it's 26% - there's a known bug and workarounds (google it).

I have steam running pretty flawlessly on Sabayon x64, however, I have the steamapps folder as a symlink in another location so if I need to kill the .wine directory, reinstall, etc I still have the bulk of the data (was at 40+ GB at one point!). The game cache files are all located in that folder - which should be in ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Steam/steamapps

Also, I found that setting HL2.exe to run in win 98 mode cured a LOT of headaches with random crashes (apparently, the HUD in CS:S causes a buffer overflow because the fonts are not rendered the correct size if you run it in one of the newer modes).

Unfortunatley its not getting to the stage where you get a percentage - its getting stuck on the last block of the bar for "creating cache files" at this point no downloading has taken place (from what I can see).

Thanks for the other points - I will take another look for the cache files when I get home from work :)

Also - check out PlayOnLinux.

I was sceptical at first when someone else recommended it, but it is actually particularly useful, as by default it adds additional wine prefixes and it's trivial to swap between wine versions (for if a game works better on older versions of wine and regression testing). Also has a fairly large database of scripts for automagic installation of of games and apps (still have to set the win 98 mode yourself though...).
