I'm planning to buy two bottles of red wine (totalling ~£60) as gifts for some people. Any suggestions? What wine would you buy for that kind of money?

A couple of bottles of Chateauneuf Du Pape - you can't go far wrong with

or I had a lovely bottle of Domaine O'Vineyards Proprietor's Reserve recently given to me as a present and it was superb - hard to get hold of in single bottles/normally have to get 6 at a time.

I'll just copy and paste what I've said before in the last thread like this:

Wine is very difficult to buy for someone unless you know specifically what they like. It's very easy to spend silly money on a rubbish bottle too. £30 could get you a bottle no better than a £5 bottle from the supermarket in some cases.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is very much a 'name drop' wine that people suggest all the time because it has a cool name. There's some cheap and nasty ones out there, so buy from a quality wine merchant. Shops like Majestic sometimes have a person that is clued up and really knows what they're talking about so it's well worth enquiring, but I generally find small merchants to be better than these large chains. I've found Tesco have some very good quality and well priced wine too.

If you can, try and find out what they like. If you can't, then don't spend £60 on it. I'd hate to be bought some wine that was fairly expensive but tastes rubbish.

Virgin have got a half price mixed case on at the moment for 50 quid, grab that and have a few left over for you.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Looking for quality rather than quantity (and I'm off the drink for the foreseeable).

I think I'll get down to Oddbins and ask their staff for some further advice.
