Calling all Wing Commander fans!

Just over six months into development, a Wing Commander mod for Homeworld 2 has evolved towards being able to release something playable for fans to enjoy.

Developed by a single individual, the mod boasts authentically modelled and textured Wing Commander ships (fighters, bombers and capital ships) and structures (bases, jump points and more) from the Wing Commander IV (The Price of Freedom) era aligned within three distinct factions: The Terran Confederation, The Union of Border Worlds and The Black Lance. A custom Wing Commander-styled user interface has been implemented, while original sound effects, comm chatter and music have been integrated into the mod, amongst many other developments to allow for Wing Commander fans to experience the universe in a whole new way courtesy of the capable Homeworld 2 engine!

Please note that is a Pre-Beta Download - first version ever. There is no AI support at all and while all three factions are included, the Black Lance Faction requires further integration tweaking -- selecting the Black Lance as a playable faction will cause the mod to crash. Multiplayer capability has not been sufficiently tested and may or may not work. Also the loader is in its first stages, it will improve so dont be alarmed if it takes a long time to start the game.

Homeworld 2 (released in 2003) only natively supports 4:3 resolutions, but custom and wide-screen resolutions can be implemented by appending the mod shortcut -- instructions for this should be in the HW2 readme. However, at this stage, the custom Wing Commander interface will only work at 1280x960 -- this will be rolled out to all resolutions as development continues, along with many other improvements, features and tweaks.

Apologies for the quasi-press release gushing, but as someone who was involved with research and beta testing duties for the mod between June and September this year, I'm pretty stoked to see the mod becoming available -- I had a great time testing it and with the many improvements since then, I hope others who remember the venerable Wing Commander franchise will derive as much enjoyment from it too.

For Homeworld 2 fans, selecting the main campaign, instead of a custom match, will allow you to build/research Confed ships from the Hiigara's Pride from the second mission onwards if you'd like to test out Confed's finest against the Vaygr interlopers!

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

1. Install Homeworld 2 and apply the 1.1 patch (if you already have HW2 installed with one or more HW2 mods installed, then it is advised to backup your mods, uninstall HW2 and apply a fresh HW2 install).
2. Download the mod executable file and copy it into the the following folder ($:\homeworld2\bin\release\) where $:\ is whatever drive and path you installed Homeworld 2 on.
3. Run the mod executable file - a loader will open up, click the launch button - it will take a few minutes to unpack all resources and will automatically run Homeworld 2 and the mod.
4. Enjoy.

If you have any problems with the install or if you'd like to provide some feedback, check out the two main development threads:

Update on the multiplayer:

It's been tested and provided you launch the game from the mod launcher, you should be able to setup an online multiplayer match using the mod's assets.
