Wing Mirrors at Different Angles?

Hi

Very random one, do your wing mirrors sit at different angles? Not the mirror glass itself obviously but the mirror housing?

I've just replaced mine with some carbon fiber housings and now notice that the passenger side one is tilted further backwards, as if you'd pushed it to fold it in towards the car slightly?

Some people saying its normal for the passenger one to be different, but now not sure if there is any truth in it or if I've just fitted mine incorrectly, or if it's normal and just never noticed.

I've seen them different sizes (old Mercedes), but not different angles. That's what the adjustment is for, surely.
 
Are the electric folding mirrors, or manual? It sounds like maybe the mirror isn't fully extended and locked into place.

I just had to replace the electric motor in my passenger mirror after it stopped working consistently, so I've become somewhat attuned to mirror angles over the past few weeks :p

Manual, both definitely sat in the correct 'home' position where they click into.
 
It sounds odd. Perhaps it's done like that to tilt it toward the driver more, given that it's on the other side of the car. But then, given that the glass itself must be able to move, why not just make the mirror housings symmetrical.
What car is it? Are these carbon fiber mirrors literally just a replacement housing in the same shape as OEM, or a completely aftermarket design?
 
It's an Audi TT Mk2, housings are OEM parts covered in Carbon I believe so should be identical fitment.
 
I was a bit bored so found this on Google. Seems it's normal for a Mk3, so perhaps the same for yours as well and you've just never noticed.

Got an Audi showroom nearby? Go and have a poke around their forecourt cars and see if it's the same :p

I guess it kind of makes sense. The passenger mirror will generally need to tilt more toward the driver to give the same view backward, as it's on the far side of the car. So maybe Audi have designed it so the entire housing is rotated inward slightly, so the mirror glass doesn't need to be tilted quite so much.

Think I found the same thread last night yes, I've also had a look at our A3 this morning, that has power folding ones but it also seems sat slightly differently.

Maybe just one of those things you never notice until you take them off and play with them.
 
Some cars do this around 6degree difference between the passenger and driver. This is so the nominal glass is correct with sufficient adjustment then for most drivers without having to package a larger adjustment range and mechanism for a common housing.
Some cars hand the mounting system so the mirrors are the same.

Depends how the parts bin works out on a range of cars and what challenges for vision and aero exist, also all the other content on a mirror head eat into the room that you have for glass movement. Ie cameras, indicators, puddle lights and even sonar.
 
Sometimes they’re not even in the same place on the opposite wing.

Porsche 964,993 and the Mercedes 190E spring to mind.
