hi all im having trouble with winrar which is the only program ive ever used for extracting, when i extract the files or files usually u will have a icon install or a install exe. but instead im getting a 001file??? when i click on it it brings up the install exe but when i try and install it it says it needs then next volume and im missing rars dont understand this ive tryed several different program downloads all with this problem? have tryed several reinstalls of winrar.

Sounds like you have join the extracted files with HJSplit
Yep or some other archive splitter. I think WinRar and 7-Zip can both do this. When there is a .001 then you'd need the .002, .003 etc files. There is normally a .rar file as well that acts as a link for all the .00x files I think.

Files like that have sometimes been split using the split command found on nearly all Unix-like systems. if you've got a Linux or Mac box handy you can use the cat command to quickly rejoin them.

thanks for all your replies what is the solution on fixing this problem as i have done a reinstall and havent used 7zip for a very long time as far as im aware its not on my pc or any other extracting software apart from winrar

thanks for all your replies what is the solution on fixing this problem...

It sounds like you have a nested archive, i.e. an archive within an archive.

Extract the contents of the archive to a folder as normal. Then if the folder contains several files ending in .001, .002, .003 etc, highlight them all with the mouse, right-click and choose "Extract Files...". Choose a location to extract to and you should end up with the install.exe file plus any other files inside the archive.
