Winrar Problems

Hi,

I'm not entirely sure where this should go, but I'm having some strange problems opening rar files. I recently downloaded the cinematic mod for HL2 which is about 9GB in size and I am unable to open it as winrar is giving me corrupt file errors.

I downloaded it again last night from a different source which I suspect is good and the same thing is happening. Thinking back, I recently installed a new Samsung 1TB HDD and transferred most of my data over to that. 1 of the things I transferred over was a 6GB rar file which I know was definitely ok as I'd previously unrar'd it. I deleted this last week as I was having the exact same problems with it. I've tried re-installing the latest winrar but that hasn't worked.

Does anybody know what could be causing this? Is this a problem with winrar or my HDD? Can anyone point me to a smaller rar file that they know is definitely ok?

Thanks :)

Thanks, I'll give 7-zip a whirl when I'm at home in an hour or so. How would I go about trying to recover the file?

No luck with 7-zip, same problems :(

Could I just be unlucky with the download? Would still not explain the other rar which was fine before a fresh install of Windows....

Strange suggestion I know but have you tried running memtest or something similar?
I highly doubt this is the problem since there would be more symptoms but I am thinking that WinRar loads files in to memory while extracting.

Hmm, interesting. I'll run memtest when I get back from work. I have had a few blue screens lately, but they certainly aren't very frequent and the errors that pop up after always quote graphics drivers.

Will also try extracting on another PC and report back.

Thanks all :)
