hey just having a bit of trouble with some .rar files.... heres how the story goes....

ive finially decided to put all the music from my laptop onto my new pc but i have almost 18gig of songs and only a 4gig pen drive, and i cant be bothered to put in all the cd's again and convert them all.
so i used win rar to create a .rar file for them and split the volumes into chunks that will fit onto the pen drive. so i have part one part two part 3 etc etc etc.....

now ive copied them all over onto my new pc so i have the same line up of rar files as was on my laptop, however when ever i try to extract them it comes up with an error saying a file is corrupt and an unexpected end to the archive and stops..... now am i trying to extract them wrongly? as i am just rightclicking the first file and telling it to extract.

do i need to re merge them or soemthing?

or can you suggest anyother was of transfering the songs?

Are both the desktop and laptop connected to the same network (LAN)?
Or you could connect them both directly together using a single ethernet cable.

For both methods you have to create a network share.
For the 2nd method you have to assign fixed IP addesses to both.

If you don't know how to do any of the above then continue with the USB stick. And I can't see what you might be doing wrong with the rar files, it should work.

thanks i just thought of file transfer over my network so i turned on discovery on the pc (vista) but when i try to click on my laptops icon in the network it asked me for a user and password ....

no worries ive found out how to do it :D

this muight take a while to transfer:p
edit: yes it is taking a while :( seeing at i have excellent signal and on ym laptop and ethernet cable on my pc it shoudl be able to transfer at 54Mbps? but it was going at agout 400kbps then died down to 11kbps?! wtf.... maybe tomorrow if i just cable them up i shoudl be able to ready 100Mb?

Not sure why you were rarring and splitting in the first place - more steps for errors to occur (btw occasionally winrar gives me errors and 7-zip steps in and works). Why didn't you just copy the songs over in 5 batches or burn them onto 4 dvd discs? The second way you would have also backed them up in case of future problems. It's hardly going to take a long time. Saying that though, transferring them via network would be a one-step solution. And yes, cabling them will be quicker. You probably know this but you won't be able to connect the pc and the laptop directly using a standard ethernet cable. You will need a crossover cable. With the ethernet cables you can obviously connect them through the router thouhg.

connect with a cable or use wireless (cable is faster)

on pc2 (with music on), right click music folder, and choose 'sharing', share the folder
on pc1 (with no music on), click start, run, type in..

\\pc2 (replace that with the computer name)

if it asks for login details, type the administrator username and it's password for pc1, it'll show the shared folder, now copy & paste
