Its that time of year again and I am looking at renting skis for my holiday in January

I have always paid about 100 euros for either 'performance' or 'excellence' for 6 days without insurance

Is it worth buying your own skis if you only go once a year?

I am thinking about getting something like these -

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ROSSIGNOL...rtsLeisure_Skiing_Skis_JN&hash=item337dbe7f25

They would pay for themselves after a couple of trips but would need to carry them also pay carrage - about £30 I think but not certain

Should have probably given more detail initially -

I have been skiing since I was 15 (~13 years) so reasonably good. I can do (in a fashion!) any black and have done some double black runs. I usually venture off piste but not properly into the wilderness, one occasion I have climbed with skis so reach a peak for some fresh snow

I have owned my own Salomon boots, with custom liners for about 10 years. Still in great condition along with a helmet I have had for a couple of years. Hestra gloves (2 years), Oakley O frames since I have been 16 too.

Id say I am a good but not fantastic skiier - I like to push myself and a few times have pushed a bit too hard.

Ski shops used are the usual ones - Ski republic and Skiset. Cant remember which we used in Canada. Usually get Rossingnol and was thinking about buying some second hand Rossingnol Experience 83s for ~£250. I think I usually have 165s, maybe 170s (5' 9")

Thanks Quick

I love my boots and even leave them on and done up for lunch and apre ski when everyone else is in pain taking them off. One night i had 'a few' and didnt realise i still had them one at 1am! Haha

Moulds make all the difference with boots. I hated hiring boots at sheffield dry slopes, could only wear them for an hour or so before being in a lot of pain

If I'd had a pair of boots that were 10 years old I'd definitely be buying a new pair, regardless of how comfortable they are. Get a custom footbed as well, as there's no reason people shouldn't be buying one with the boots these days.

Why? I have custom footbed and they are still like new apart from some scratches on the outside

My dad has had his Nordica boots since his early 30s. So 25 years, they still work for him every year

I have Salomon Performa CF 7, with custom moulds. I think they are CF7s

Think i'll stick to hiring ski's for the time being until I decide to go more than once a year. Not really worth the time, effort, maintenance etc for just 6 days a year

These goggles have been very good for me - http://www.shadestation.co.uk/Oakle...ml?aff=aff10&gclid=CKydqPqA0bMCFaTMtAodRGEAKw

Buff headhear are very good, i have one similar to this but a pattern thats a bit less dull! http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=bu...0&ndsp=48&ved=1t:429,r:5,s:0,i:86&tx=44&ty=67

It's pretty worrying that you've just bought them and they're pretty roomy.

This, dont want your feet slopping around in them when skiing. After a few hours skiing you will need to tighten them up a bit too (even if you use custom foot moulds)

Whilst im on the subject of skiing in general, has anyone booked up for January? Im going to Alp D'heux on 12th Jan for a week

I have these and are great apart from the fact that the frame, and therefore the lens is pretty small. They don't steam up at all.

Never seen the idea of massive goggles that cover your face - They do look cool for the snowboarders!

I suppose they do keep the face nice and warm too

Those runs look interesting, not sure about taking an ice axe and rope though! Maybe I will watch other first

QuickLink - I'll look into dates and things.

edit - I see its from 1st - 6th April. How much is it for tickets and accomodation for a week? (about)

I suppose another reason to rent skis is things like having a few too many beers and skiing down a snowy road back to our chalet (holding gerkins, sausages and bread) ...The crossroads had been gritted! Que me and my dad stopping dead and being fired out of our skis head first down the road, food going everywhere!!

If you are good at skiing you should be able to cope with any types of bindings / skis surely?

I watch ski videos from the early 80s and the equipment they use looks terrible - However they can still ski amazingly well

Give me the best skis in the world and I couldnt ski to their level. Cant polish a turd!

From last season, but I still love this video. :D

This is what skiing is about for me, playing around and having fun, not carving on ice.

I would love to ski like that. I will make do with playing inbetween pistes until I am a bit better - Dont think it will happen with only one week a year though :(

That Tanner hall video was a good watch. Thanks

Still THE best Ski video ever made IMO is P-Tex, lie and Duct tape

Other videos of valley X on youtube which are fantastic. Great tunes and generally the way its filmed. I have watched it every year for over 10 years now! At the end of the full film there is a mountain they ski in Whistler, I have ski'd this from a bit further down. Nothing like what they climb too but still :)

I would love to work as a ski teacher / guide. It blows goats I have to sit in front of a computer 6.5 hours a day, 5 days a week... Just so I can afford to go skiing once a year

edit - I have hired ROSSIGNOL Experience 83 TPX (categorised as excellence skis) from Ski Set. 6 days for £88. It shows them as all mountain skis so good for piste and off piste. Anyone know anything about them?

I have hired experience 76 or something in the past and remember them being quite good

Bought a Dakine Heli pack (11 litre) today. Seems like a good size for a day bag instead of the 20 litre one I had before. Buying a bladder next I think - insulated if possible

Lets hope for a 9ft snow dump before I arrive at Alp D'heux on 12th Jan, then clear skies for a week... one can dream

Watching the forecast and webcams is making me want to pack it all in and go live in the mountains for the next 5 months.

I've only been skiing once before. Help :(

It only gets harder the more times you go.

I think an ocuk 2014 ski expedition is due! Get a proper big (25-30 people) catered chalet for a week with a £500 limit. Must be able to get some sweet deals & on lift passes if 30 people are booking!
