And I have some first world problems.

I like a bit of fresh air but can't turn the radiator on since my beer fridge is next to it, and I'd end up with warm beer.

So to stave off the cold, I'm going to need an additional heat source. Some might buy a heater, but I have other plans.. time to do a bit of folding since my new (now oldish) desktop is sitting here not doing v much most of the time..

However, I have some issues.

  1. No internet (or rather, intermittent internet)
  2. I've forgotten my password for bigadv

I have a distressing lack of landline internet so use my phone as a hotspot when at home. This may lead to delays in downloading or uploading WUs.. is this a big deal?
And does anyone know if I need a new password for bigadv (or if it's even worth doing yet, currently stock clocked but that will increase)?
Currently running a 4770K + HD280x.

TIA.

By reference to bigadv you are talking folding@home.

In that case you have probably mislaid your codes for folding, not bigadv itself. And what you need is a passcode, rather than password. Check out http://folding.stanford.edu/home/faq/faq-passkey/#ntoc8

But bigadv as such is being phased out. It is currently only available to users who have some 24+CPU cores on one PC.

You can do the more normal SMP type CPU WorkUnits with your 4770K. What you will also find is simultaneously you can use your 7970 GPU to fold.

If you download the current folding client, https://folding.stanford.edu/home/the-software/ then most of the CPU and GPU settings will be created automagically, all you will need is your username and that passcode. The passcode is not in fact essential for you to fold, but it helps you to eventually get bonus fast return points on some WUs once you have returned at least 10 correctly.

As for internet connectivity, it should be possible to stash a few units, but adjusting a couple of settings in the client software. But don't store too many or you'll loose that bonus for not returning in time.

Ah yes, I now have my passkey back :)
It was hiding in my emails all along.

I had a read of the folding@home sticky but unfortunately it's once again fairly out of date (think it was updated roundabout the same time I stopped folding) so thanks for the update.

I'm hoping that since I have already completed many WUs, that will count and I'll start getting bonuses right away.

Will investigate the 'stashing' of units, guess it helps to know how long each one takes..

Cheers
