winter jacket

my choice would be a naval or military greatcoat... got one myself, and it's amazing

calf length, warm and comfy... exactly what you need in this cold weather

added bonus... the long coat looks epic when walking and the wind catches it lol

With modern materials don't need to wear much to keep warm. A waterproof windproof jacket and fleece should be enough or if it's really cold add a padded lumberjack working shirt as well.

Down jackets can be a bit too warm sometimes... great if it is super cold (or indeed if you're using them for their originally purpose and are out tracking/climbing) but otherwise, day to day, they're sometimes a bit too much.

I've got a north face jacket which is sort of a compressed fleece... fleece material on the inside but the outside doesn't have the fluffy, fleece texture. Tis a bit more practical for an "average" winter day... can easily add a jumper/other layers etc..

Down jacket and a massive umbrella if rain is forecast.

So warm you will think it’s summer, except your face will be frozen.

I have a Mountain Equipment Vega jacket which comes out when it gets very cold. Rab down jackets are good as well.

just got an old seasons ski jacket for my coastal walks ,they are only £30 so was worth a try and under a kilo
was great in newquay yesterday

If its just cold & windy, then a Haglofs down 3/4 zip jacket. Worn that in -14c with just a t-shirt underneath. If its going to be wet then a "goretex" like jacket over the top.
Job sorted.

This. It's a really weird feeling to be so hot and toasty but with an ice cold face :)

Personally I think the "michelin man" jackets are pretty chavvy

They do a little. But having experienced a decent one I don't care what people think. I'd take warmth over looks any day during mid winter. Mine is so hot I love it; the hood is amazing and putting your hands in the fleece lined down pockets is like putting your hands in a pillow. The outside winter just melts away.

However a lot of people just buy a cheaply made but expensively sold one from a regular "designer" clothes shop. So get the chav look without the real warmth they can give. That's the worst of both worlds. So I'd suggest either getting a proper one from an outdoors shop or an own brand one from an outdoors shop.

I got a long winter coat from tesco in 2015,it was only £30 (in a sale) and its so warm i can wear a tshirt underneath and nothing else,a coat is something personal and worth trying high street shops for the kind you like.

I bought the Mountain Equipment Lightline at the end of last year. Not as high spec as the Vega though. I'm not one that likes the puffa style jackets but after putting it on it felt like I'd got into a sleeping bag. I do need to be careful at what temps I use it in though as it does really warm me up. I mostly purchased it for freezing days on the airfield glider flying in winter as things only get colder as you go up and there is no heating in a glider! Does a great job of keeping me warm.

If I hadn't already bought my Rab Infinity I would have grabbed a ME Lightline. I looked at one recently and it looks just as good and better value.

I don't think anyone suggesting down really means the old-style "michelin man" style ones. E.g. I have a Haglof's Essen Mimic which I've been wearing with simply a vest and a shirt to work. Don't need anything else in 5-10c. If it's raining I'll put my North Face shell over the top (or just take an umbrella if it's not windy).

We went for a walk yesterday and I wore that with vest, tshirt, Haglofs fleece and I was never anywhere near remotely cold. Probably didn't need all those layers to be honest.

I was out walking a few nights ago, around midnight, and the temp was down to just a degree or two above freezing. All I had under the jacket was a tshirt and I was so warm I had to undo the jacket slightly.

Another couple of tips (apart from layering) is to keep your head and feet warm. A good hood is better than a hat because your neck is also warm. Thick rubber soled shoes or boots are essential to keep your feet warm.
