Actually I was wrong plus 30+

Rice is a monster

All this shows is that both players play in incredibly defensive teams. Newcastle have drawn 8 games already and Westham have always been defensive under Moysey.

Neither player are at the level of say Casemiro or Kante. When you are dominating teams none of those stats really matter.

Very similar to Casemiro and Rice is playing for one of the worst teams in the league.

Theres only so much a DM can do

Isn't that kind of his point. Thats like saying that the best keepers make the most saves. They don't, they often make the least because their team concedes very few shots. DMs in more attacking sides have far less work to do than those in teams that sit back more.

Depends on how you defend.
Newcastle have one of the highest defensive lines and very quick at wining the ball back.

For a "defensive team" Newcastle have scored more goals than Manu.

But I'm not really arguing for Newcastle or J7.

Rice is fantastic and I would have him in a heart beat. I never really rated him until I watched him more closely for England. (More defensive role)

5th in the league for passes In the other teams half.

Well personally i think he's a quality DM he's young only going to get better, he's yet another leader (Arteta has slowly filled our team with leaders and captains all over the pitch) and i'd love him at the emirates.

It was interesting to read the other day how many arsenal players have been convinced to do coaching badges since arteta joined. Zinchenko/Xhaka/Holding/Soares/Elneny have all completed the UEFA B license since arteta joined.

I like Rice also, there is way more to his game than just CDM too, he's a really strong runner with the ball and a great passer. In a much better team, I suspect he would be a better CM. It's just unfortunate he's English, so he will be given a stupid price tag and therefore hated by many as if it's his fault :D

@Robbo slightly better than McTomm? come on...

That link you have posted is a year old. Goals for is also a bad stat unless you take it with context. When we had a huge GD the other season it was due to us pummeling Southampton by 9 goals not because we were scoring loads. Pummeling 10 men teams etc.

I never used to be sure of Rice. I thought the hype he received was ott and he was nothing more than a steady eddy but in the last year I've been impressed with him, possibly due to his strengths mostly being what Liverpool's midfield have lacked. His physicality and ability to get around the pitch is a huge plus for the position he plays. He's no Xabi Alonso but he's more than capable enough on the ball but the thing that's most impressed me has been his leadership and the way that he never hides, he's always involved in the game whether it's defending when his side is on the back foot or driving the side forwards when they're chasing the game.

Whether he's worth the money West Ham will demand (I don't think we're talking £100m), I don't know but he's a very decent midfielder. I do think we're in an era of fairly average CM's tbf though.

If his stats are fantastic why are Westham so dire? Anyone can stat pad on passing if you are playing it back to your defenders all the time. If he was a top tier CM he would be carrying them a lot better than they are now. Look how much of a difference Casemiro has made to United.

CM's are the second most important position after a 9 and when you look back at all the historically epic sides they have had top tier in that position.

Not sure about Weghorst... half decent, target man (we don't have one) - might be able to do a job...

ETH used Haller in a similar role.
