Hi. I tried to install SP2 on my bro's PC, but all games are visually messed up after installing it. There's particles all over the screen, weird shapes and colors. It's the same for all of his games.

I have tried several different version of nvidia's drivers. I only use official drivers. He also has DirectX 9.0c installed, which causes no problems when it is running in SP1. In the end I had to roll back to SP1.

Here are his main system specs:

ti4200 128mb 8x AGP
sempron 2800+
1024mb PC2700

Help will be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

Some games just dont like SP2 when it has been installed over the top of them. To be honest SP2 should only be installed during or just after a fresh XP install. That way you shouldnt run into any issues with games not working etc.

Thanks for the reply.

Another question, are there any security threats when using SP1 instead of SP2? If yes, please list them?

Well, I cant list them but SP2 was released in order to beef up the security of Windows XP and as such contained a lot of fixes that stopped pre-SP2 viruses and exploits from working.

I think it is foolish NOT to run SP2 as I believe the vast majority of updates require SP2 [although I could be wrong] and there are probably still lots of viruses lurking around the internet that could infect an SP1 XP.

So in short, yes there are threats but no I couldnt possibly list them.

Ok, thanks for your help. I have 1 last question. Is it possible to get viruses that won't show up in task manager processes? And would viruses always be listed under the administrator or owner's name? Is it possible for it to be listed under System, local service, network service?

That's all thanks :)

Viruses run under all sorts of headings, however any running program will have a process in the taskmanager. Some are easy to spot, however, many more are disguised and may APPEAR to be a system process.

Only two ways to know for sure if you have a virus.

1: Virus makes itself known by doing annoying things to your computer
2: Your AV software finds it.
