Well ive just been to my aunts house, they said their PC was having problems.

Get there and unable to login to windows, the desktop background appears and thats it. Doesnt do anything else, no HDD activity. They told me they tried to login the other day and it said the user profile was corrupt. I tried logging on via there user account and the administrator account both times resulted in desktop background, but nothing else, no taskbar, no icons.

Reboot and try F8 > Last known configuration. Same results.

Reboot and try Safe Mode > Get the black safe mode background and hangs like usual. I CTRL ALT DEL and open task manager and attempt to run the system restore app, i get a prompt asking if i want to "continue in safe mode or use the system restore app. Press No to run system restore ..."

I press No and a window opens (im assuming this is the system restore) but nothing inside the window appears.

Anyone got any ideas of what to try next?

had a similar problem with my Uncles some time ago, windows wouldn't even repair from CD, had to format and reinstall in the end, hope you don't have as much hassle as i had
