Winy 7 vs Win 8 for performance and gaming?

Hi all, having not yet tried Windows 8, I was musing over if it is worth the upgrade to Windows 8 from Windows 7. Any compatibility issues, or performance issues (since Metro runs desktop as a sort of VM)?

I run both on different PCs, there's no improvement from one to the other at the moment in terms of performance, some pros and cons on both sides in terms of compatibility but mostly balanced out.

The only minor thing that Windows 8 has it future Direct X support, it's getting some elements which won't be on any older OS.

My gaming PC is Windows 8, but to be fair that's only coincidence not through choice :) It's highly unlikely you'd notice any improvement at the moment from one to the other either way, but if you have the license for Windows 8 and are doing a fresh install I'd wait until 8.1 is out as that may change things.

Don't worry about the desktop - it's all native. Is it worth upgrading for better gaming performance? No, but if they run an upgrade offer at the 8.1 launch it might be worth a punt for future proofing reasons.

Not had a problem really with Windows 8, only minor things.

Mumble (voice comms) had an issue running an overlay with Planetside 2 originally.
X-Fi Drivers for my Elite were a pain in the butt to get working, but I got there.

Other than that, everything has been just fine with Windows 8.

Had windows 8 since release never had a problem with it, I love the Modern UI for me personally its a lot faster than a start menu.

@Scougar - You can't blame Win8 for your X-Fi issues, I do not think Creative have got drivers right since Vista lol

I wanted so much to hate Windows 8 and I will even admit to hoping that its the new Vista, but in truth, I kind of like it.

I have bought the Stardock suite of Apps and so I got it to look a bit more like Windows 7 but this can be done just as well ( mostly ) with free apps.

Speed-wise, I would say there is ZERO difference in the running of any games or apps but I have found a number of issues that I have found to be a bit of a PITA.

Speedfan, while it works, I cannot dump it into the StartUp Folder to get it to load up on startup.
Virtual Clone CD. On a fresh install its good, but upgrading from W7, it wanted me to reinstall. A minor issue of course.
A couple of older Benchmark apps dont work either.

Again, these are all silly things, but when you use certain apps, it gets annoying when you can no longer use them.

... if it is worth the upgrade to Windows 8 from Windows 7...

I like windows 8, though I turned off Metro. Been using it for over a year on a few machines. No problems gaming, unless they are really old games, and they don't like Windows 7 either.

But there nothing in it worth upgrading for. I got it when they had cheap upgrades.
