Go to http://www.versiontracker.com/osx and look for Stuffit Expander.

Install it, then locate it in the applications folder when you choose "always open with".

must have as by default i was able to open the zip file you posted earlier, screenshot below

No, OS X will say that's the default app, but it isn't actually installed per se.

Go download it from versiontracker and then try again.

StuffIt Expander will pop up when you're unzipping then disappear when it's done.
