i bought my Laptop with Vista installed, and this morning i wiped it and installed XP Pro on it.

The final straw was last night when Vista took 25 minutes!!! to delete a 2gb file...i mean 25 mins!!! ...and CPU was at 70-80% the whole time  the whole thing has always felt slow, slow, slow.

Now im back on XP , its like ive got a whole new Pc again :)

I know Vista is the future and 1 day it may well be a decent OS, but for now XP is still king in the Pc universe.

Oh and just to test how much Vista was holding back my lappy when it came to gfx....compare the scores

3dMark01 Vista = 3280
3dMark01 XP = 5840

Crappy scores either way, but it is a £400 budget laptop, but just by changing OS i've just about DOUBLED my 3d performance.

Rant over... :D

Ps

How can i get back the 7GB hidden partition that is the recovery image for Vista?

Vista isn't holding it back, bad drivers are.

For me Vista is far superior to XP it is in general much faster, sure gaming is slightly behind XP but that's drivers, I can live with that since the OS is far superior. :)

Really, i think everything in XP runs much faster.

deleting large files shouldn't be a problem. i regularly delete old backups (15-20gb single files) on my external usb2 drive and they go instantly?

still i can't argue with your experience. glad you're happy with xp. :)

Quoted for truth

I couldnt ever go back to XP now, tried the other day when I had to reformat and check something on XP, and even on a fresh build its just not as quick and responsive as Vista

Exactly the same drivers...7.6 Cats

Also i've got my frame rate back in MAME.. :D , it was all over the shop in Vista, plus my Sega Saturn emulator works again :D
My Laptop Specs are:

AMD Turion 64 MK-36 (2ghz)
1GB Ram
ATI Radeon Xpress (Full DX9)
80GB 5400rpm Hdrive

I suspect running Vista with 1gb Ram is like running XP with 256mb.

I have the same problem with Vista. I'm not gaming that much so I don't about games. But in general file operations, like copying and moving files it takes forever. For no reason. Its not all the time just randomly. Ditto the "calculating" message that appears.

I remember reading somewhere that Microsoft have acknowledged that there's a bug in Vista that causes slow delete/copy/move actions, and that there will be a fix in SP1.

I know I have that problem. Just deleting a few files sometimes takes forever, and as for transferring files over a network - SLOW! I get about 15MB/s max in Vista on a gigabit LAN, whereas in XP it was at least twice that.

Other than the issue with copying/deleting files, Vista does seem snappier and I'm sure once this is resolved and it gets proper driver support (lazy nvidia and ati/amd) there will be no reason for people to use XP.
