Right, I'm having problems with my external hard drive. I had to format it NTFS to actually wipe it, then had to run chkdsk in order for it to let me shrink the partition down to a small enough size to format it in fat32, and I've now got a 16.5Gb NTFS partition and 449.2Gb of unallocated space. But I can't format the NTFS partition into FAT32 as it says the media is write protected. I've been butting heads with it for most of the day trying to do this, now.
Navigating to it, and unchecking all the hidden folder option, there is a 'system volume information' folder on the drive which I can't access, which I would assume is causing all these issues. This isn't being used, and its not from any Windows install I know of, so it can be safely deleted... if I knew how.
I've tried:
cacls "G:\System Volume Information" /E /G Iviv:F
Which has let me delete it... which just created a recycle bin folder on the drive as well, and the folder itself doesn't delete. I can, however, open it. Inside is a chkdsk folder, and inside that is the chkdsk log from the fix I ran on it earlier. I'm still unable to format the drive.
I tried running the cacls command just on the G:\ and it said it worked, but no formatting. I've also right clicked the drive > Security > Advanced > Owner, and changed the current owner from System to Iviv, but still nothing! This is driving me nuts, I want to wipe it! D:
Edit: Tried using some of the unallocated space to create a new partition, it created the partition but is unable to format it.
