Just had virgin 500Mb fibre installed and getting great speeds to the router and 1 laptop via wi-fi. My desktop is hard wired to the router and only gets 80Mb + my wife's win 10 laptop only gets 55Mb via wi-fi? Is there a way to improve this? Would a USB Dongle wi-fi connection be better. Any advice would be appreciated, thank you.

What are you using to test speeds? Make sure you're not getting bits and bytes mixed up.

Assuming it's the PC in your sig, and it's a direct connection with no powerlines or anything, do have have any of the Asus software installed, eg GameFirst? Remove that if you do as it can interfere. Does Windows report it being connected via gigabit and not 100mb?

As for the laptop, do you know the wireless network card being used in it? Is the test being done right next to the router?

Using Virgins own speed test. No Asus software installed. I am using a wired connection from a socket near the router wired to another socket in my office and connected by ethernet cable.

Does windows report it being connected via gigabit or 100mb? In case the wiring from the sockets could be limiting it to 100mb.

Get a gigabit cable and plug that from your router into your machine. You will also need to check the spec of the onboard LAN (assuming most modern motherboards are above 100Mb just showing my age).
