Wired Connection Not Receiving Internet

I have been using my wireless connection without any problems for weeks but I tried to connect a network cable from my pc to the modem but it won't let me conect to the internet. I just get that box which says 'work offline' or 'try again'.

I thought it was due to the cable having a bit snapped off at one end which 'clicks' when you put the wire into a port. But the modem lights fires up as well as the little orange light on the back of my pc which looks like it is securely connected.

I've tried setting up a network and adding a new connection but no joy. In the 'network connections' window, all I have is a 1394 connection. Shouldn't the wired connection be showing up here.

Anyway I'm sure it's something very simple which somebody can point out for me. Thanks

if you're not showing "local area network connection" in network connections the LAN adaptor isnt installed. Check for it in device manager.

That would be under 'network adapters'? All I have there is the wireless and 1394 - so I guess this means I have to install the LAN drivers from Asus website?

it would be under network adaptors

if its not there, and you've not got an "unknown device" or similar showing, its hardware is goosed.
