just a quick one I’m currently setting my my desk area and would like a wired connection.

My router is in my back room and is virgin media so runs though coaxial cable, the router goes straight into our TV box and the wife isn’t keen on my running an Ethernet cable through the living room into our front room where the desk is. Now I do have the telephone socket in this room and this room is where the virgin media cable enters the house, can I run a wired connection from the socket or must I come via the router?

Thanks in advance

Thought this would be the case, thanks.

Any other way around it other than drilling the hole and running the cable through? At least I can tell her I’ve tried :p

From the sounds of it the Virgin coax follows the route you want the Ethernet to follow. Cant you route the Ethernet alongside?

Could you split the coax to have an outlet in each room? Virgin would probably do it for a smallish charge.

Previous owner has run it under the floor, I’ve only moved in a month ago there is a split in the coaxial cable in this room, it runs into a old NTL box and then to the back room. How would I come off this coaxial though?

I was thinking that you could move the router to the front room. You just need the coax to the split so there’s a connection for the router in one room and a connection for the set top box in the other.

If the cable is under the floor can’t you route Ethernet under there as well?

Unless I move the router in here and run the TV box off the WiFi?:confused:
Does the tv box need to connect to the router? At my parents the router was upstairs and the tv box downstairs with no connection between them. The coax split outside the house and was sent to each room.

Do Powerline adaptors work well, I’ve heard mixed reviews. Also the wiring here isn’t the best; old style fuse board and stuff, not sure they’ll be up to the task
They are a lot better than they used to be but probably need to be tested to ensure they will work properly. Possibly better than WiFi but not as good as a cable, if you can't get a cable in then they may be a good choice.
Andi.

Phone socket is irrelevant, normally (and it depends on the original franchise operator's install policy and when it was first installed) you'll have an isolation plate on the wall, the internal cable will connect to the outlet, use a small piece of cable and a splitter to give you two feeds, use one to the modem next to your desk, the other to the V6. Set the V6 box onto wifi or follow coax route with cat5e or better if you need a cabled connection to the box (always better), yes that sounds like it may involve lifting a floor board or two, but that's relatively minor unless you have laminate or similar.
