Wired Mouse stutter - Windows 11

Hi guys,

I've suffered from mouse stutter before, that turned out to be a mouse on its way out but now it's back again and I'm not sure what's causing it... Basically, if I move the mouse cursor, it will stutter at a consistent interval.

Two wired mice, plugged into the same USB 2.0 port directly to my motherboard (maybe I should try them on a 3.0 port - seems a waste though), 1 basically new and the other one 2/3 years old. A Steelseries and a Razer, none of the vendor software running on startup.

I'm convinced it's a process or something but not sure where to start.

Any ideas?

Is your BIOS up to date? Why not try another port? Even as part of your troubleshooting process.
Yep, bios updated, all Windows stuff and drivers etc. I've been testing this morning on a different port, a USB 3.0 one and the issue 'appears' to have gone away... for now anyway, I'm still going to keep my eye on it :D

Try running LatencyMon

See if it points to anything specific.

As an aside I've been having a nightmare with my PC this week and as part of it moved from Win10 to a fresh Win11 install.
And from the off the Win11 install wasn't right, audio issues, mouse feeling like it was 'catching' all the time.
Stress test/benchmarks all ran fine, though scores a little low and noticable stuttering.
But desktop use was horrid.

Too long to go into it all but after trying so many different things I dropped my memory multiplier down one and the issues went away.

Probably not going to be your issue and I'm now worried my CPU is on it's way out but might be worth a look/test.
Thanks, definitively going to check that app out later!

Nope. Stutter's still there

Have you anything new since/before this started? First suspect of hitches would be RGB software or wireless devices.
Literally have everything disabled from startup, bar OneDrive - which I kind of need.

I disabled iCUE/Synapse/GG, the last time I got stutter... I'm going to try Safe Mode later, see if it's still there then.

Screen refresh rate? I sometimes notice this when I’m accidentally at 4k 30Hz or something as I use an old HDMI cable etc.
Another good shout! My resolution is 2k on a 3060 ti and I use a very good quality UGreen display port cable. I'm sure the refresh rate is 144Hz - going to have to check it out now :D

My monitor's refresh rate is 165Hz to be fair - I don't think its that :D

So frustrating - it's not doing the stutter thing now...

Sounds like a mental question this, but are you using a pcie riser cable/vertical mount for your gfx card? If you are, try taking it out of the equation and put your card horizontal for a test. I had something very similar and crazily it turned out to be that!
Ha, there are no mental questions at this stage :D But no, my gpu is straight into the board.

nVidia app/driver, has to be... I've just updated the driver and done a clean install and the cursor stutter is back! I was recommended to disable G-Sync on another forum and now its been restored. A coincidence?

Are you using multiple monitors? that can sometimes cause issues with G-Sync and app or mouse smoothness especially with certain applications running which use hardware accelerated rendering like Spotify, Firefox, etc. try closing any application like that and see if it is still happening.
Nope, single monitor set up. I've been away for a week and only used my rig a couple of times since I've been back, both times I didn't notice any stutter. I'll try and have another play later.

I've just started getting the same thing, it hitches about 3 times a second. Razer Basilisk wireless, but it's no different when I connect it with the cable (which it usually is). I have connected a second mouse and it has exactly the same issue. It seems to have come from absolutely nowhere which is really frustrating.

Using the mice on my laptop reveals no issues, which seems to rule out issues with the mice themselves.

@slipd did you ever solve your issues?
Yep, that's the one! I've solved the issue in the sense that I've not had it for a couple of weeks... it still shows itself now and again, I'm convinced it's a Windows issue. Definitely not hardware - I've tried too many different mice. Currently on a Steelseries, but I miss my Razer so will probably swap back.

One further point, I'm not sure it's the mouse - If I go onto a webpage and hold the down arrow on the keyboard, the webpage scrolls down, but stutters at exactly the same rate as the mouse stutters. Seems to be more of a processing hitch, in which case.
Chrome?

Yes, but some sites on chrome (bbc news as an example) work fine, whereas other hitch. Still baffled. Gone out for the day, left windows to reinstall and will finish when I get back, hopefully that sorts it.
Please keep me posted, I've literally been on the same Windows install since Vista...

Well, that didn't work. Gone through a repair install of windows, no difference. Not quite sure what to try next... So frustrating!

Forgot to mention - the games I had installed in gamepass all showed errors when I tried to load them. Steam games were fine (loaded crusader King's 3, worked fine but with hitching). Something odd has happened.
Ah, a repair install? I thought you were going to do a clean install? Literally touching my wooden, well composite desk, as I type and I'm literally seeing no stutter. I've no doubt it'll be back again at some point though... I've had nothing of use, re: troubleshooting, on any of the MS forums

How do you accessed internet? Wifi or ethernet?

I found many reports same issue with X570 Tomahawk WIFI.

Found one user managed to fixed mouse shuttering with 2 feet USB 2.0 extension cable to avoided signal interference from Wifi antenna.

Ah, yes, I actually do... I've a mesh node nearby though so I'm going to try a wired connection to that. It's typically not doing it at moment but it should still stop it coming back. Thanks!

I've gone back to wired for the time being and still no return of the stutter... if it is/was a MSI thing, you'd have thought they'd have fixed it by now, surely?

Thanks though :)

Bah, after all that, it's returned... been playing around things all day, no joy. Razer Synapse 4 is horrible btw!

It's possible that I either have two dodgy mice (Razer/SteelSeries) displaying the same symptoms or that I need to reinstall Windows. I haven't done a fresh install since early 7.

Might try a source a different mouse to try first though :)
