Would like some advice on creating a wired network at home.

Basically, got Virgin 50mb installed a couple of days ago and the speed is full 50mb via ethernet. Over wireless, lucky if I get 25mb, mostly around 15mb (using a Linksys Cisco WMP600N connecting at 270mbs it says). My dell 1749 laptop using 1397 wireless G card is on average a bit faster.

Should I buy some extra cable to extend the virgin cable moving the superhub upstairs into office? Or should I send a cable, I presume ethernet, from superhub in the hall, going into some sort of router upstairs to provide wired connection to laptop/desktop in office?

50mb is only the internet speed, it won't effect your internal speed.

Ethernet should be 100mb/s, usually you get about 80mb/s. Wireless will always be slower as the max for 802.11g is 54mb/s

you will almost always get better speeds using wired networks, it's just up to you if you want to go to the expense and time to wire your network...
