Wired network connection keeps failing

Hi all

I have a TalkTalk D-Link router to which I have a number of wired devices via power line adapters and a number of wireless devices. Increasingly, the wired devices keep on failing to connect showing as an unidentified network and being allocated a crazy IP address. I thought I had fixed this by manually setting an IP address for wired devices but this evening it has packed in again and was showing as an unidentified network. The wireless devices work fine.

Does anyone know what could be the problem or what I should do to diagnose?

Many thanks.

If the devices with problems are connecting via Powerline adapters then that's almost certainly your problem. I'd guess they where ending up with IP addresses starting with 169?

Another less likely possibility is an accidental connection to a neighbour's Powerline adapter. Did you enable encryption when you installed them?

If you want a completely reliable Ethernet connection then the only option is a cable.

Yes they ended up with some obscure IP address like that. It's currently working absolutely fine again which doesn't really help explain what is actually the problem.

It could just be something else that's plugged into the mains causing interference. Fridge/freezer starting up, central heating pump, Microwave, Christmas lights, etc.
