I'm trying to set up a network in my student house so that my flat-mates and I can share our internet connection, but I'm having a few problems.

So far I have a cable telewest internet connection running through a standard cable modem. The internet works with one computer connected directly to the modem. All the rooms in the house have network points with ethernet cables all running into the front room so I bought a Netgear 8 Port Ethernet switch and plugged both the modem and all the network cables into it.

Now the trouble is that all the computers report "limited or no network connectivity" when plugged into the network and when I try to repair the connection it gets stuck on "renewing IP address". Anyone got any ideas?

yep you will either need a router or an old pc running one of the linux distros (smoothwall, ipcop and the like) to do the routing for you.

Yes you'll need a Cable DSL Router between the cable modem and the 8 port switch like so.....

Cable Modem -----Router -----Switch ----- PC's

----- = CAT5 Cable

The router will have a WAN port to which the cable modem will plug into, and no doubt a 4 port switch aswell, one of those network ports on the router (generally the last one) will act as an uplink port allowing you to extend the network which will allow you to plug in your existing 8 port switch.

Something like the Netgear WGR614 54Mbps Wireless Cable DSL Router (NW-010-NG) on OcUK would do the job nicely and give you Wireless Access, or the Netgear RP614 Router if you don't want wireless :)
