Have tried this so many times, and never succeeded. It's an absolute pita. Does anyone know the exact steps to do this?

Those are badly outdated.
Use the MotionJoy drivers at: http://www.motioninjoy.com/
I've used them and they work absolutely perfectly.

Didn't even know you can get a wired PS3 controller
Thought they were all wireless bluetooth ones
They are wireless, it's just I don't have a dongle. So wanted a guide on how to do it wired style.

I struggle with this program so so much. OK so it's installed and works, but of course it dosen't seem to want to recognise it as a 360 controller. Which means it works in phychonauts but not batman :/
Any ideas?
Yes ofc I have installed the newer drivers with 360 emulation, alongside the microsoft 360 driver.

motionJoy is not that difficult to work out, great little program. Although there are a few problems i found.
MotionJoy doesn't work unless you are connected to the internet.
(Might be fixed now though)

take 1 wireless ps3 controller add one usb to mini usb cable and voilà you have a wired ps3 controller \o/
I thought the USB port on the pad was only used for charging it
