  • Virgin media 10mb split between 4 students
  • Router in downstairs bedroom
  • PC will be upstairs
  • Currently 100% signal upstairs on laptop
  • Room mate is going to use 30m wired cable

I am moving in the next few days and want some advice on which components to buy to get optimum performance for my ping in gaming.

My roomy is going to use a 30m ethernet cable and I am next to his room upstairs so it makes sense to use a cable as his will be throughout the house anyway so if I get wireless or flat cable to be tidy it seems pointless and more expensive. Is cat5 satisfactory for a 20m cable on 10mb?

The cheapest option seems to be wired 20m cat5 flat cable for 20m CAT-5e RJ45 (RJFLAT-20) Beige FLAT for just under £8 delivered seems like a deal breaker to me? Advice please! thnx

If your housemate is running a cable to his room get a network switch in there and then run the cable from that to your room, saves having 2 going up the stairs, but equally you could just run 2 up, 1 to his room and 1 to yours.

cat5 will be plenty fast enough, at those distances cat5e will give you 1Gbps if you ever starting moving large files around the network etc.

Personally I always wire my computer up, only recently when I've started using my netbook more have I bothered putting wireless on.
