Just bought a receiver adapter, this one here:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-Wirel...es-/190715472410?ssPageName=ADME:L:OU:GB:3160

Followed this tutorial exactly:

EDIT: Removed youtube link cause of swearies, guide I followed was "Connecting Wireless Xbox 360 Controller to your PC [HD]" on youtube.

The receiver lights up just fine, however, I can't get either of my 2 wireless controllers to connect to it, lights just keep spinning.

I have tried different USB ports (the back, the front and on my Dell monitor) but still no luck.

Any ideas? Is there a different method that I should be doing to connect the controller to the adapter rather than what I would do when connecting it to the 360?

OS is windows 7 ultimate 64 bit.

did you link the controller to the receiver?

press the button on the receiver and then press the button on the back of the controller

Tried doing that. Hit the button on the receiver then turn the controller on (tried turning the controller on before the receiver too) and hit the small connect button, but lights just continues to spin on the controller.

Have the drivers for the receiver been installed? Windows 7 should install them through Windows update under optional.

I downloaded the drivers from the microsoft site and installed them before connecting the receiver and then restarted the PC. (apparently the ones that come on the CD and automatically downloaded ones don't work)

Strange, I've never used the CD ones but the ones downloaded by Windows update seem to work for me.

Is the receiver shown under Devices? No issues shown under properties?

Yup, it is shown under devices and driver is supposedly "working"

Will uninstall the drivers and try just the windows update way and see.

My official one just plugged in with no drivers and worked flawlessly.

Not sure how these 3rd party ones use the official drivers.

There is a trick to getting it to install :p

The non MS ones are actually better than the MS ones because the official ones have a resister that fries after some time of usage. I had 2 which did this, did some research and bought a 3rd party one off ebay.

I'll post how to get it working a bit later on when home.

Edit*
The gist is to install the official MS software for the official one then manually point the 3rd party receiver in device manager to the official driver you need to choose a certain device type that I will confirm when home) and it will trick Windows into thinking it's the official one.

I think I have done what you are suggesting mrk, this here:

- Uninstall any drivers you've tried to install already - go to device
manager and uninstall the driver for the "unknown device" (which is just
uninstalling the device really, seeing there is no driver) and also
uninstall any driver software through control panel.
- LEAVE THE DEVICE PLUGGED IN.
- Restart PC.
- Download and install the latest driver from the Microsoft Site.
- Restart PC.
- Go to device manager - you'll notice it still shows up as an unknown
device. Right click on it and go Update Driver.
- Click "Browse my computer for software".
- Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".
- Select "Microsoft common controller for windows class"
- select Xbox 360 controller for windows Version 2.1.0.1349 and click next. It will warn you about possible
incompatibility, install it anyway.
- It will ask you to restart. Do it.
- Once restarted, go to device manager and you should notice a new slot -
"Microsoft Common Controller for Windows Class", and under it, "Xbox 360
Wireless Receiver for Windows".

That sounds right yeah although at no point did I restart.

I did have to reinstall it after moving the receiver to one of my monitor USB ports and just reinstalled via device manager, again with no restarting

I just tried reinstalling it and it still doesn't work, will try moving to another USB port! GRRRRR!

EDIT:

WTF?!?!

It has now synced to the receiver. I just left it on the flashing of all 4 circles for like 4 minutes and didn't do anything.

Will keep an eye on it in case it is a duff adapter.

Thanks for the replies/help, much appreciated! :)

EDIT:

Now it doesn't work again.......

Right it seems to connect some times, but disconnects after like a minute if even that then just has the 4 green lights flashing at the same time.

Tried replacing the batteries.

The receiver green light stays on constantly.

I take it you've paired it using the correct process by pressing the receiver button then holding the controller's connect button next to the headset port for a few seconds?

Yeah the receiver LED blinks after being pressed and the controller LEDs have the spin effect for about 10 seconds and then the receiver just goes to constant green LED whilst the controller goes back to all the LEDs flashing at the same time.

Completely black, but on the bottom it says "PC wireless gaming receiver"

This is the one that I got:

Ah mine is slightly different then, it just says "XBOX 360" above the button. Wonder if it's from a different 3rd party then although the install process is the same.
