Wireless absolutely useless on Netgear

My trusty linksys has started to fail, and so I have started to use my Netgear as supplied by the Post Office

The exact model is :-

NETGEAR DG834GSP v3

I have done many tests and the router is the cause of all my wireless issues, so, how can I boost the signal without throwing it in the bin?

Get a new higher gain antenna(if you can remove the antenna on that version that is )
Have you Changed the default channel number?

Yes, Antenna can be removed so I will do that for sure.

I have done nothing else to it, apart from the obvious username / password etc

I have also tried upping the Firmware but it fails and says to contact the administrator.
