Hi all,
My brother is with Blueyonder, and has their standard cable modem they hand out. He has got a DLink DWL-2100AP access point, and we are trying to set it up with it being plugged straight into the Ethernet port on his modem. It goes through the routines, but struggles making the connection to the internet.

Should this type of setup work ok? I've stuck the AP straight into my router and it works great. Actually, I wonder whether DHCP was enabled when i was trying it out there. It gave me the error message of Acquiring Network Address, then "Limited or no connectivity". Humm :S

It should work, yes. Have you power cycled the modem? I think you might need to do that to get it to connect to the AP as it'll be wanting to be connected to the ethernet card in the laptop.

sorry but that is misinformation. It wont work, you need a router.

It will work. In this sense the wireless is replacing a length of network cable between the modem and the PC.

You will however need a router to connect more than one PC to the internet, but the OP gave no indication of multiple PC's.

I'm not entirely sure about that. Unless the AP has a bridge mode, it will take the IP address from the modem.... and the PC will not be able to get an IP.

Yeah, that was what it was doing, struggling to get an IP. I think it would be a better solution anyway to get a wireless router, as he has a couple of PC's to use with it, and an inbuilt firewall wouldn't go amiss.

Cheers,
Matt
