Wireless access point

What's your budget?

Ubiquiti UAP would be my choice, their AC range probably the LR or PRO but depends whats in budget.

Uniquiti UAP AC Lite would probably be great, AC Pro if you've got a bit more budget. For me, two cover 3,000 square foot of house and a third of an acre of garden if that gives you a frame of reference.

Although undoubtedly great access points, part of the reason they often provide better coverage than people are used to is because they lend themselves well to being ceiling mounted, and that position gives greater coverage than something sat on a desk/table. I took the time and effort to run ethernet cables up into my loft so I could mount them up in the rafters there and it's made a great difference.

If you're willing to put some work in, a UBNT AP as advised above would well be worth it as you do get better coverage top down however if you only need the coverage in one place which already has some form of structured cable to it then a "normal" desk mounted AP is just as worth while.

ALL 2Ghz wireless access points "should" only run at 20dB EIRP in the UK so a lot of the claimed differences are purely down to antenna design (bearing in mind we're talking EIRP which is total output which is power + antenna). The UBNT ones generally win the votes as the antenna is directional (ish) and this focuses the available signal into 180 degrees where your "desk" jobs generally go for omin antennas so they produce a 360 degree coverage (same power but less concentrated).

TL;DR UBNT AP's are awesome and this forums go to, you may not need one if you don't need entire house coverage.
