Just getting to the end of my garden office build and I need to sort out networking. Plan is to run a pair of Cat6 cables to the room from an existing switch (second just an unconnected spare in case primary fails), in the room I want Wifi for mobile, laptop, and an amazon echo but also require a wired gigabit connection for my main iMac.

Any recommendations on a single device for this? Thanks

Or almost any wireless router configured as an access point. It's not uncommon for routers to have an access point mode that's selectable from the GUI. If it's only for a single room it wouldn't need to be anything very special.

As you're running two cables any way you could use them both and not worry about needing an access point that'll pass the wired connection through.

Another question, would an access point like those listed above (or utilising an old router, which I think I have an unused NetGear unit) create a completely separate SSID and if so would connected devices see other devices on my original wireless setup as being on the same network?

You can choose to use a different SSID but don't need to.

You'd configure and wire it so you have a single network (everything on the same subnet). If you're using a retasked router you'd connect it LAN-to-LAN and ignore the WAN port.
