I'm looking to add Wireless-N to my existing network, but I would like some gigabit ethernet ports on it too.

My network atm consists of Netgear Router (10/100) ---> Netgear Switch (10/100/1000) ---> 3 computers and 1 cable going to the front room for PS/Xbox/TV (they have to share the 1 cable)

So I would like to put a WAP on the end of the front room cable to give access for laptops etc but also I would like to be able to plug in the TV and PS3 with a cable (I stream HD movies)

Does such a product exist?

Or would I need another gigabit switch on the end of it and just plug in the 1 port gigabit WAP like the Netgear WN802T

As self contained units, i am not sure. It seems when they start bolting gigabit ports onto a wireless access point they go the whole-hog and turn it into a router. If you dont want to use a gigabit router, you could just get something like the netgear GS105 5 port gigabit switch for the front room, and put an access point in to that, but then you might as well just use a router :p

The WN802T is a wireless n AP with 1 gigabit port
The WN604 is 4 ported but only 100 megabit

So using a router would be ok? I thought 2 routers in 1 network clashed.

Or do I just have to turn off something in the 2nd one...is the the NAT or DHCP?

I only have a little knowledge of these things, never really tweaked any advanced settings in routers

turn off the dhcp, dhcp is the mechanism that gives computers their own ip address automatically and should be left to the first router in the chain (or one connected directly to the t'internet) and then the other should just switch the traffic

Ok, I have now got a Netgear (N600) WNDR3700 Wireless router.

The modem I am using is the good old Netgear DG834

I am trying to set it up like :

Internet - DG834 - Switch - N600

With my 3 computers plugged into the switch and the consoles plugged into the N600

But the computer doesnt see the N600 or the PS3 now thats plugged into it.

Does this configuration work or do I need to go :

Internet - DG834 - N600 - Switch

This sort of defeats the purpose of wanting the wireless connection in the front room though....

the n600 must look to the dg834 as it's gateway, dhcp must be off, and the cable from the dg834 must go into the wan port...

What is the IP address of your DG834?

The standard 192.168.0.1

It seems I will have to plug the new router dirtectly into the DG834 then, shame as I would have prefered DG834 -> Switch -> N600

But I can still make the the other way work

Will tinker later today

it *could* work dg834>switch>n600, I have a second BT HH that way, and it works - but it was a right pita to get working. Try going direct to dg834 first, and then when it's working, plug into the switch.

If you dont mind loosing the rooting functions of the WNDR3700 you can do it like this...

Set your DG834's DHCP range to 192.168.0.10 - 192.168.0.200

Plug your computer in to the WNDR3700 directly, and dont plug anything else in to it, and go to the config page (192.168.0.1 I think).

Set up the SSID and Password for your wireless N network

Then go to LAN set up and change the LAN IP address to 192.168.0.2. You will now need to release/renew your IP address and then go to 192.168.0.2 in your browser.

Finally, Disable DHCP on the WNDR3700 and plug the cable from the DG834 into a LAN port on the WNDR3700, plug the rest of your devices into the LAN ports to. Leave the WAN port on the WNDR3700 empty.

Ok, I ended up plugging 1 pc directly into the WNDR3700 as I still couldnt see it when plugged into the DG834

its default IP was 192.168.1.1

I changed this to 192.168.0.30 and turned off DHCP. Then I could see it when plugged into the DG834 and access both setups via their IP addresses. (even though on network map it show it as 192.168.1.1 still?)

Now ive taken it downstairs so its DG834 -> Switch -> WNDR3700 and to start with it was there on my network infrastructure and I could access it...then after a reboot its no longer there and I cant access it via 192.168.0.30 or 192.168.1.1 *but* it is working per se as my PC can see the PS3 that is now plugged into the WNDR3700 and it is showing up on full network map..

Why cant I see it on infrastructure or access it via IP in browser, as I need to to set up wireless connections

always access it with a cable to setup stuff, much easier that way. once you're up and running wireless is ok, but you have got to get all the settings right first.

Yea, I mean I cant see it or access it with it being cabled

I have done the factory reset now and finally can see it again when plugged into pc directly, it is back to 192.168.1.1 , is it ok to leave as this IP or does it need to be .0.xx

It's sort of working atm, though it is plugged into the DG834 through the "modem" ethernet port

The wireless is set up, and my sons laptop can connect to it, but the laptop has no internet access it says "the wireless device does not have a valid IP configuration"

But all the wired pc's are on the internet np

Ok, after much swearing, head banging, factory resets on the N600 and a couple of calls to Netgear (who say that modem -> switch -> router will work)

I finally have it all working, though its Modem -> Router -> Switch , i'll settle for that :p

The thing I really *dont* get :

Netgear say the same thing, DHCP on the new router must be switched off, and do not plug DG834 into the "internet" port of the N600 since the DG834 is a modem/router it needs to be in a LAN port.

Well you can guess...

Its all working fine now with DHCP on both routers ON and the DG834 in the internet port...

I'm not touching it unless a problem arises :p

No! Dont do that, you are being double NAT'ed. If you follow the instructions I gave you correctly it will work. I have 3 "access point switches" that are set up like I told you to and all work beautifully.

Whats wrong/what problems will the double NAT cause?

I will try again and switch the DHCP off again then.

Thing is I have 5 cables to plug in and only 4 LAN + 1 Internet port on the N600
