Can anyone please recomend me a pci wireless adapter please for my PC, mostly go online surfing the web but will play online games. Would prefer a hard wired connection but it is impracticable.
Could you give us a bit more information, like what router you have etc and any more about whether you have other pcs on the network and might want to transfer stuff?
Edimax have one of the best OS compatibility lists ever! (i have the older g variant that does all windows, linux and macOS variants ) and much more importantly it does online gaming fine!
I am glad my asus motherboard came with a built in adapter, I have only used it for a few days as I prefer the wired connection but it worked well with my thomson router
Its slightly more expensive that the other adapter that was recommended but thats not in stock (and nor is the cheaper netgear, which is what I would have recommended if it was).
Yeah, if you've got a spare PCI slot then you may aswell use it. Keeps your USB ports free for more important devices. I'd just prefer to have something hidden in my PC than sticking out the back/front.
My router is the echolife hg520s, of which i believe cant recieve more than a 54mps correct?? Well i have had a good mooch on the net at wireless cards now and i cant find any technical reviews giving a good informed opionion on the card. However i have come across loads and loads of customers reviews either slagging off certain cards or giving them praise! The price varies of which ****es me off as some cards e.g. Netgear one's are really expensive for a 54mps card http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-011-NG&groupid=46&catid=1002&subcat=1000 compared to the Edimax-EW-7728IN-PCI-Wireless-N-WiFi-Card-300mbps of which overclockers use to sell and someone up there has already recommended + it has a faster connection for future proofing. So as they are the same price and the other is better for future proofing and has better review is it better going with the edimax???
In November last year I thought I would add wireless to my parents PC to save me using a cable (they only surf on it). I bought the cheapest thing I could find (2 actually):
D-Link AirPlus-G DWL-G510 Wireless PCI Adapter
At the time it cost me £12.70 each lol! Its currently available for about £16 now though. Both were used with Windows XP pro and have been working without issue ever since. I didnt use the driver on the CD, I just went straight to windows update and the driver was on there, and it worked like a charm!
Oh and it also comes with a half height bracket too, which I thought was a cool extra.
I personally wouldn't worry about the 300MB/s cards unless your trying to get the best possible transfer rate between computers. The 54G card I have gives me 2-3MB/s, which is a hell of a lot faster than my 8Mbit internet connection at the time (only 4mbit now )
