Wireless adaptor for gaming

Hi.

I presume a wireless adaptor is ok for gaming as long as it's rated as fast or faster than wired?

I have a Netgear DG834GV3 and need a cheap wireless adaptor as my mum is so fussy and won't let me route the phone cable upstairs :

Will this adaptor work with my router and give me full speed as well as lag free gaming?

I only have a small bit of experience with USB Wireless Adaptors but I'd personally do a bit of research on whether USB ones cause high latency during gaming.

From my own experience using a laptop with integrated WiFi I never get any latency spikes, but in the brief time I used a USB Adaptor with my desktop PC I noticed when the CPU was under high load I'd get large lag spikes on the connection. From my limited understanding USB peripherals can be a little too CPU dependent which may cause you problems.

I'd just confirm this as true / false before you buy.

Speed isnt really the issue when gaming its the stability of the connection thats important. I think your router is also only wireless G compatable which isnt a massive issue but it means speeds are limited to 54mbps. From experience cheap usb wireless cards are not too great and can suffer from poor signal and generally be unrelaible.

For a desktop pc I would get an internal wireless card for the most reliable connection and signal. Something like http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-000-SX&tool=3 would do the job better than a usb adapter.

Would that wireless card be better for sure? Why would it be better?

I want faster speed because transferring files over the wireless adaptor I have atm, which is a netgear, speeds are so slow, around 1.5mb/s I'm transferring something at the moment. I notice in UT2K4 on my laptop, with wireless I was lagging in game, when I switched to wired it was fine.
