How can I use my existing speakers to play music from my phone or other wireless devices? I guess it must be something plugging into the headphone output so that the phone speaker is muted.
Any ideas?

For ease of use, a Bluetooth music receiver. I have a Logitech one, which I use to stream music from my phone. It's pretty good quality for the £24 that is cost. Isn't as good as using wi-fi or a wired connection to a decent DAC or sound card. Being Bluetooth, you can't expect it to really, due to compression. For a cheap easy way of getting music from a phone or tablet to a speaker system though, it's ideal.

Apple Airport Express is another option.

Yes if streaming from a pc or mac. No if you have an iphone/ipod/ipad to stream from. I use the spotify app but you could load it up with music instead.

Depending on the model of your Synology NAS, if you are using their Audio Station s/w, then get a supported USB Audio Adaptor, plug that into the USB socket on the NAS and output to speakers.

Voila.

Found a couple at the Synology forum for the 411. Can't see any reason why they shouldn't work with the 211 tbh. If it works it will be much better than bt range wise but probably less compatible as I was planning to use the Synology app to stream music and radio.
