Hey,

Just doing some advanced planning for my new system build and was wondering about my internet connectivity. I have a 60mb/s package from VM and want to get the best connectivity to my PC.

In order to reach top speeds I understand cabled is best but that would take quite a bit of DIY to get from the rooter to my Pc location but its something i'm willing to do if it makes a big difference.

I dont know much about these cards but I am looking at the http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-048-BF&groupid=46&catid=1597&subcat= and the http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-057-TP&groupid=46&catid=1597&subcat= and was wondering which one is best.

I will be gaming with my new system but don't want to have to sacrifice my general internet usage speeds because of it. So what would you suggest and is there anyway to estimate the speeds i would get using one of these cards from the stats provided?

A wired connection is always best. Don't waste money on a Bigfoot NIC. The on-board NIC should be fine.

As said, running a cable is always the best option, although not always easy to. I would suggest homeplugs instead of wireless. They use your electrical cables to send the data, so you just have an adapter connected to the PC and router.

Something like this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-199-NG&groupid=46&catid=1604&subcat= - there are cheaper ones but you'd have to research into them specifically to see if they are any good.

That would save a lot of hassle but would I be getting the same high speeds as if I had a wire all the way to my rooter?

Be careful when using home plugs, depending on your electrical mains you can see a big difference between two home plugs on the same level of the house to two home plugs on different levels of the house.

I live in a town house and my modem is on the ground floor. Plugged into a 500mb home plug and the other home plug is on the top floor in my office. Even though my internet speeds is slower than if i was to transfer large files from one medium to another then my home plugs would not be used at my full capacity.

Hope that makes sense.

For you - if your planning to transfer large files from one PC to another = Lan.

If you doing casual game, web browsing = home plug.

If you have to use wireless, make sure there is enough coverage and that the channel isn't interfering with other frequencies.
