Wireless causing system lockups

When I run my system with the D-Link G520 and the D-link I get irratic lockups on bootup or whilst using a browser, if I knock the D-Link software out and run using Windows Zero Config I only get machine freezes using the browser. After some crashes Windows refuses to load the card claiming it cannot be started and goes back to being stable. When using the D-Link software, CPU-Z locks the machine up at about 80% loaded, no idea how that is connected to all of this!

I tried removing the card and running ethernet and everything seems stable but ethernet will not keep me in the parents good books. So in the interests of getting wireless running again I decided to drop my spare card (Belkin F5D7000) in. When using the Belkin software the computer judders a lot and eventually locks up totally, using Wireless Zero Config the machine seems to run fine but when I am using the Belkin card, neither Belkin or Windows can locate any local networks.

The D-Link card ran fine on my old system once I put SP2 on and I am presently running on XP-32 SP2, and the system runs stable when the cards are removed or disabled. Changing OS will happen in a month or so but I don't think my parents patience will stretch that far!

Does anyone have any suggestions for me to try? I am happy to provide more details if needed. Thanks in advance!

The wireless cards have both been tried in the lowest PCI slot available (there are only 2 on the Gigabyte UD5P DDR3 board), not sure what number that is referred to but a semi-educated guess is #2, I will try the tool and report back later!

How about a wireless usb adapter?

I have one, but it appears to be hiding from me at present. I will try it when it is located.

An update on the PCI Latency tool, tried it in both Windows XP and XP Safe mode, and there is a 50/50 chance each time I try to run it that the machine will either insta-freeze or sit with an hour glass by the mouse and allow me to move the mouse but no keyboard commands work and clicking has no effect, if I double click anything it freezes. I tried leaving it but after 20 minutes it still had done nothing.

I'l try taking the wifi card out and running it again in a little bit.

A slight update, have now located the USB wifi drivers and device, having installed them the device mounts and un-mounts constantly, but is not locking the system up!

Anyone else think this might be a power available issue for the USB rail?

I will hunt down a powered USB hub for it in the morning :(

Interesting, I posted this in the General forum:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18019187

Summary is when using uTor or browser, I get complete freezes. No BSOD. Have to reset.

I will give the tool posted above a go to see if that helps but really didn't know different PCI slots made a difference.

Funnily enough I have 2 x F5D7000's sitting about but I've not installed them because I keep reading about them having dropout issues (pretty common when Googled for). I do have XP 32bit, so not sure if that might change things.

Christ, well I booted up the tool but am at a loss as to what to do next. Everything on the list is at latency of 0 apart from the soundcard which is at 64 and the network adapter which is also on 64.

Guess I've got to have a test and play to see what works best. And a bit of a google.

EDIT:

Fingers pointing at shortening the latency. Going for 32.
