Wireless connection is dropping but shouldn't be

Hi all,

I'm really at my wit's end with this one. I consider myself to be pretty computer literate, running a PC Repairs business and what not. I've asked every tech support guy I know as well, and they don't know the answer.

Here's the PROBLEM:

I've got 2 machines, a PC and laptop. I'm currently using the laptop, connected to the Internet via an Edimax USB Adapter to a friend's wireless network across the street. The connection is fine, nice and stable and I'm getting healthy transfer speeds on downloading and page views etc.

However, when I take the USB adapter out of the laptop and plug it in my PC things tell a different story. The connection drops after a few seconds or sometimes instantly after connecting.

I've formatted the PC and reinstalled Windows. Still no joy. I thought it might have been a windows conflict but alas, it's not.

It can't be signal strength because I've been sat at my PC on the laptop and have been surfing away merrily.

What is it that the USB adapter doesn't like about my PC, yet it works so well with this laptop?

Both machines are running Windows XP (the laptop Pro and the PC Corp edition). They both have Service Pack 2, they're both fast enough and have up to date USB ports. I've reset the PC Bios to defaults and can't think of anything more to do. They both have similar firewall setups etc.

Specs of my PC : Abit IC7 Max 3 Mobo / WDC HDD / P4 2.8 Chip

Specs of USB adapter:

Standards- IEEE-802.11b/g
Bus Type- USB 2.0 Type A
Frequency Band- 2.400~2.48356GHz ( Industrial Scientic Medicinal Band)
Modulation- OFDM with BPSK, QPSK, 16QAM, 64QAM (11g) & BPSK, QPSK, CCK (11b)
Data Rate- 54/48/36/24/18/12/11/9/6/5.5/2/1 Mbps auto fallback
Security- 64/128/256-bit WEP Encryption
Antenna- Internal Antenna
Drivers- Windows 98SE, ME, 2000 and Windows XP
LEDs- Link, Activity
Transmit Power- 16dBm (Typical)
Humidity- 0~95% (Non Condensing)
Certification- FCC, CE

----- Any Help would be greatly appreciated. Like I say, I've tried everything, which is a lot more stuff than I've detailed here - such as removing firewalls etc. As well as this I've asked my friends in Tech Support roles and they can't answer it neither. So it will be pretty much a God Send if anyone can resolve or help to resolve this for me. Thanks.

Is your pc backed up against a corner ? If you had a USB extension cable with the adapter, use that and place the adapter somewhere free from corners etc or just on top of the pc.
Do you have wireless phones near your pc ?
